I'm working on a very special series of guitars.  They will be my new fingerstyle model, but will feature some of the best inlay artists, as well as some other type of art too.  Lately we have been seeing over the top, inlay laden instruments.  While I enjoy that as much as the next, I wanted to take it in a bit different direction.  I wanted to see the creativity of these amazing artists, but in a different sense.  I'm going to be doing a series of instruments that showcase this.  The inlay artists I'm commissioning can pretty much do anything they want.  No restrictions as far as subject, or materials.  The only real restriction is size.  They are confined to a 1.250" circle that I'm incorporating into the rosette area.  I'm plan on bringing three of these instruments with me to healdsburg.  2 will be Brazilian rosewood, and one will be a Curly Pink Ivory back and sides.  All will have European spruce tops.  Here is one Where I'm doing the inlay.  I'm not stellar inlay artist by any stretch, but I can do some elegant style stuff.  This is pretty pedstrian compared to what the other artists will do, but it's my series of guitars so I figure I can get in the action too.  More details later on the instruments coming, but I'll let a little detail slip.  The first guitar (the pink ivory/European non-cutaway fingerstyle model) will have inlay done by Craig Lavin.  Look for more details in the coming months.

This is the first time I've EVER shown this prototype off to the public.  It's still waiting on a lot of sanding, and the neck, but here is a quick couple shots of Prototype #17.  Really low grade woods Lutz/EIR (it's a proto after all) but tonally they are good.  You should hear the tone that comes from this box!!

This guitar is 4.450" deep, and 15.5" wide at the lower bout.  The first proto I did was shorter, and smaller than this one, but basically the same shape.

Over the past 14 years I've been building I've been working on a prototype.  I've built 16 of these models.  None have ever been shown to the public.  All were destroyed after being completed.  I did recycle the neck on about 6 of them.  The reason I destroyed them is because they were not what I wanted.  The first few were bad.  The next handful were good, but not great.  The last few have been excellent guitars, ones I could have easily sold and people loved them.  Yet I still was left wanting more.  I'm currently building prototype number seventeen.  These guitars are quite a bit different than my standard offering.  Not so much from a visual take, although there are some differences there too, but internally they are much different.  They are very responsive fingerstyle guitars.  Made to jump out at the slightest touch with tone much bigger than you would expect.  I've been refineing this design, and I'm coming very close to what I've imagined in my head.  I owe some of this improvement with this design to Ervin Somogyi.  I've really enjoyed reading his books and applying some thought process' and decisions based around his techniques. Maybe this one will be the one.  If not I'll try again, but I plan on releasing this model at healdsburg 2011 if I can get it just right.  Stay tuned for more info on this, yet unnamed, model.
